Grapes for our wine come from the Northeastern "Tre Venezie" region of Italy, where the Pinot Grigio grape has been cultivated for over a century. The Pinot Grigio grape is genetically related to Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc, and is easily subject to color mutation. Skin color of the grapes can range from a bluish gray to a delicate pink, depending on the clone and the geographic zone. In fact, the word "Grigio" means gray in Italian, although the juice is drawn off the skins before they impart a pink tint to the wine. Where are the grapes grown?
The Tre Venezie is made up of three smaller growing regions: Trentino, Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia. With a climate known for "cool nights and warm days," conditions in the Tre Venezie are conducive to exceptional grape maturation. Ecco Domani meticulously combines the inherent strengths of the fruit from each of these premier regions to create full-flavored wines with superb colors and wonderful aromas, backed by fine levels of intensity. Grapes drawn from the Friuli Giulia provide the wine its aromatic components, and those from the Veneto provide body and texture.
Is 2002 a good year?
2002 was characterized by a very cold and dry winter, which modified the activity of vines in the spring, as many plants suffered from water stress, thus limiting the production capacities for Pinot Grigio. Limited quantities, coupled with the superior sugar degree of the 2002 season (versus the 2001 season) have made the wine produced in this year highly coveted.
| Wine maker notes |
| Our Pinot Grigio is crafted from 100 percent varietal Pinot Grigio grapes, harvested at optimal maturity levels. The wine was made “in bianco” or “in the white,” referring to the vinification process that transforms the blue-gray colored berries into delicate white wine. A soft pressing was employed to enhance flavor extraction while deriving minimal color from the skins. Fermentation was temperature controlled between 68-72 degrees F. A selection of specific yeast was used for inoculation. To intensify the tropical characteristics of the wine, late harvest Pinot Grigio grapes were vinified and added. The wine was left to settle and was then cold stabilized, filtered and bottled under cold, sterile conditions. |
